Pollen allergy, what are the indicators to consider when purchasing an air purifier?

2026 03/09

With the arrival of the spring pollen allergy season, the sales of products such as air purifiers have increased. On March 27th, the China Consumers Association issued a consumer alert stating that when purchasing such products, it is necessary to check indicators such as allergen removal rate and particulate matter clean air volume.

The core performance indicator for air purifiers to remove pollen allergens is the "allergen removal rate", which directly reflects the ability to remove allergens. The national standard for purifiers, "Antibacterial, Sterilization, and Purification Functions of Household and Similar Electrical Appliances," stipulates that the allergen removal rate should not be less than 80%.

Pollen, as a type of particulate matter, varies in size depending on the species, with most pollen having a diameter of about 20 to 50 micrometers (about the thickness of a human hair), and some as small as 4 micrometers. How to check the removal effect of air purifiers on pollen particles? Consumers can pay attention to the particulate matter clean air volume (CADR) parameter, which evaluates the ability of air purifiers to remove particles larger than 0.3 microns. The higher the CADR value, the stronger the purifier's ability to purify particles per unit time.

Consumers should pay attention to checking whether the manufacturer's nominal allergen removal rate, particulate matter clean air volume (CADR) parameters comply with relevant national standards, whether there are relevant parameter testing reports, and to understand the cost of replacing the filter element in the later stage. Product inspection and testing institutions shall obtain the Certificate of Qualification for Inspection and Testing Institutions (CMA) issued by the market supervision department. If consumers discover false advertising, they should promptly report it to relevant departments or file a complaint with the Consumer Association.
